Tornado Warning Siren

June 2, 2008 / by rallscogadfly

OK folks.  There was a tornado go through Center, MO on Friday afternoon.  Where in the hell was the warning siren?  Believe it or not, that thing can go off at noon and six daily (in fact it went off at 6:00 pm AFTER the tornado).  There was no warning what-so-ever!  This siren was recently installed and was intended to be a warning to protect the populace, not act as an alarm clock!  I can even hear the siren in the country, but doubt I could during a tornado.  I understand people were on the streets watching for the tornado while the s.o.b was overhead!!  Some people were still in their homes going on as if nothing were happening!  Fortunately, and I mean VERY fortunately, no one was injured.  Had there been, I would think the "controllers" of the warning siren should feel just slightly guilty.

I think the residents of Center would want some answers.  I would like some answers, but doubt if I can legally complain since I'm not in the city limits.  This has got to be one of the worst handled cases of dropping the ball.  Does someone have to die before any action is taken?

Don't wad your panties Gadfly.  Center has 2 totally different sirens.

The tornado siren did not sound Fri.  It was even tried manually.  It worked on the test & 1 day it was sounded for thunderstorm warnings because someone thought it should be sounded although it was specifically stated as a tornado warning siren.  Most of us are just Ralls Countians ya know!  A year ago these same folks would have been outside looking around & I bet if the siren had sounded Fri. more folks would have been out looking around.  We all have more access to weather warnings than ever.  The weather people (locally & nationally) are forecasting severe weather enough in advance that people should be & I think are paying closer attention.  I don't think we can rely on 1 specific piece of equipment which obviously didn't work when it was needed most.

The "alarm clock" siren which someone thought we needed does indeed sound off at noon & 6.   Personally, I could do without "the alarm clock."

Back to the tornado siren.  Bet that city hall gal gets that taken care of.

Since the "alarm clock" siren was working:  Why wasn't it sounded?

    UUHHHH????  I'm just a Ralls Countian, I don't know.

It's my understanding from a 911 worker...that "certain" equipment had been hit by lighting...and they are waiting on parts....this should of been noted in the paper, so people would of known it......but then again, not everyone reads the paper.

And I have no idea who's bright idea it was to use it as an alarm clock...other towns have done it for years...but sense we haven't, it's just a confusing event sounding it at noon and 6.

It's suppose to have a different ringing lenth of time when it's used as a tornado warning.  But...like in the story of the "little boy who cried wolf" no one is gonna pay attention.

I vote for doing away with the alarm clock...and use it ONLY for tornado warnings...NOT thunderstorms either...*sheese*...only in small town USA!

Lots of rumors.  2 entities.  It was a bad situation, but it appears it was a learning experience.  Center was fortunate, the Hulse family not.  I hope that things come together & turn out well for them.  We should all count our blessings.

I have heard a lot of comments to turn off the "alarm clock."  Personally, I think that would be a good idea.

Now Chuckles needs some chuckling news.  Not controversy, just some chuckles.
